announcements

This is what the announcements are going to look like, except printed on ivory, heavier weight textured paper. I think we will probably go buy a ream, or however much we need and print them off at my work.
For our pictures, we will be ordering them from snapfish. According to some online reviews, they have some of the best printing quality, and they do 9 cent 4x6 prints, which is the cheapest we could find. Also, they have this discount of doing 50 free 4x6 prints of your first upload. Awesome.

Decor

Couches:
Couches, I like them. Ryan's roommate Llyr has a black leather couch that he said we could borrow and Karen said that we could use the couch and love seat that are at the barn. I was wanting to align them on the east wall along with some ficus trees Ryan might be able to borrow from the furniture store he used to work at.

I am not so much into the shoes in this picture as much as I am into that little (big) sign with balloons. I love balloons. Anyways, since the barn is out of the way, then one or more of these might be helpful.

The only thing that this picture has in common with my vision for the reception is the lights, branches and that it is located in a barn. Not so much the cake, owl, or farming tools.

Table Cloths: I am really into the table cloths in these next 2 pictures. I had found some awesome little rounds at the dollar store. When I went back to get a bunch, they were mostly all gone. So all I got was a round and 4 squares. I was really sad at first, but then I remembered how nobody is really going to care.

So...I think I am going to get bare tree branches, spray paint them gold, and assemble them in the center of each table. I think this will give sculptural appeal, and I think they will look interesting with the christmas lights, old bottles, and picture frames. Ryan always says that when I voice my ideas, they sound horrible. That is, until I actuate them, and he says they turn out well. So Mom, you are going to have to trust me on this one...since you last saw me, I have taken a sculpture class and I am currently in a 3-D design class. I am a visual expert...

I am seriously eyeballing the lights and vines on those chandeliers in the picture below. Love them. There are 2 huge "chandeliers" over the center of the barn, about the same height as the balcony. My mom has little fake candle lights and we will put vines and christmas lights on them, like the chandeliers below...

Just a few inspirational pictures to help illustrate the feel I am hoping to achieve...

Picture frames:
So I am really into this picture frame idea, making it more sentimental without plastering everything with our initials. Perhaps a collection of them on the wall behind the food, and I would like 1 or 2 little ones at each table. I spent about $30 on a bunch of them from the thrift store, enough for all the tables and there are many interesting shapes and sizes. I just need a few larger ones, I was only able to find one. They are all gold, with any interesting geometric or undulating organic relief on the frames as opposed to just solid frames. The 3 on the tree in the picture directly below are perfect examples, methinks.

photographer

Our photographer is going to be the amazing Jessica Peterson from Kansas. We stumbled upon her website by accident and were blown away by her work. Naturally, we couldn't afford her.
It just so happens that she does 1 free wedding a year, based on the couple's story and need. And the wedding had to be between August and December.

We decided to give it a shot and so Ryan composed our love story and sent it to her anyways. And that is how we were lucky enough to have this amazing woman take pictures of our wedding. We will be paying for her flight, rental car and hotel, which we were planning on splitting between the 2 families.

Here is the story Ryan sent her:

Melissa and I met at Mexican Monday Monday a year ago today. It’s just a Mexican dinner get together that is supposed to happen on Monday but occasionally happens on Tuesday making it either Mexican Monday Monday or Mexican Monday Tuesday. She came in with another guy and they sat across from me. I thought, “Wow, she is beautiful, I hope she’s not with that guy” and she thought, “I want to sit next to him, I hope he doesn’t think I’m with this guy.” She got up, moved around the table and sat next to me.
When I met Melissa I was four months into planning the biggest adventure of my life, a 10-month sailing trip from California to Australia. I had bought a boat with my friends Mike and Shawn and we were in the process of fixing it up and learning how to sail. The night I met her I wrote in my journal, “I have a crush on an amazing girl. Funny, gorgeous, half Peruvian, pole vaulter on the BYU track team, art major, really weird. I hope she doesn’t ruin sailing.”
When we met I lived in Salt Lake and Melissa lived 45 minutes away in Provo. There were a lot of dangerous nights driving home to Salt Lake at 4 am. I was hesitant to fall in love though because I was also commuting back and forth to California to see my mistress, Sweet Baby Jane, my 36 foot sailboat. When summer came around Melissa moved to California to be closer to me and we both got jobs in Utah working at a wilderness program. We would spend a week in California, she with her family and me working on the boat, then drive to Utah and spend a week working together with a group of at risk youth.
One night after a week of work we slept on a friend’s roof in Provo because neither of us had a place to stay. Before falling asleep I rolled over on the shingles in my sleeping bag and said, “I think maybe I love you.” She said, “You think maybe?” I said, “Yeah”. She said, “I think maybe I love you too.”
Before meeting me Melissa had spent a summer in LA living out of a minivan. She decided that every summer she wanted to live out of her car in a different US city. During our summer of commuting to California she decided it would be easier to live out of a box truck. We found a giant Mother’s Cookie truck and she spent half the summer stalking it online and drooling over it. Finally towards the end of the summer she had saved up enough to get it. She talked the guy down to 1,400 and we drove the huge thing from Salt Lake to Provo on the freeway at 45 miles an hour. It was old and dirty and full of metal and shelves. We spent the next few months ripping out shelves, putting in a wall, hardwood floors, a loft bed, carpet, painting the walls, and putting in a skylight, solar panels, lights and new shelves. I would spend a week working in the wilderness, a day or two on the truck and a few days in California. When school started she was staying in the truck and I wanted her to have a nice place to live when I was gone.
As the departure date for sailing got closer and closer Melissa and I dreaded being apart more and more. Finally the day came for my one way flight to California. December 2nd. We said our final goodbyes and she cried. She said, “You’re not crying.” I said, “I’m just pretending it’s like any other time I’ve left.” She said, “I cry every time you leave.”
I spent another week in Long Beach getting ready for the trip. We talked every night and every night I wanted to be in Utah with Melissa and not at sea with my two friends. On December 15th we set sail for Australia. The open ocean was beautiful. There were late nights alone on watch staring at the stars, days where thousands of dolphins would swim with us for hours, there was a time when a pod of killer whales swam directly under us and another time a family of grey whales jumped fully out of the water. The ocean had been my dream for so long. I had spent years dreaming about this trip and thousands of dollars preparing for it but all I could think about was how I’d rather be in freezing cold Utah than in the beautiful South Pacific if it meant I was with her. There were winter storms to the south of us and the first few days we had rough seas. We had problems with the self steering gear and we tore our primary main sail in a late night gale. Being at sea for days at a time was hard and I realized how dangerous our adventure really was. One night after an amazing dinner of fresh fish and a late night blues jam session with Mike on guitar, Shawn on harmonica, and me on banjo, I broke the news. All was quite as we sat around the galley table in our little boat.
I flew home from Cabo San Lucas 1,200 miles into our 14,000 mile odyssey. One of Mike’s friends flew in and met them and they continued on to the Galapagos Islands. Melissa picked me up in LA and I think it’s safe to say no one has ever been happier to see me. A couple weeks after I got back we were engaged.
Now I’m working on starting a photography business while Melissa finishes school. We’re planning on living in Cookie for the summer and going on our own adventures as soon as she’s out of school and we have a little money.
I know that your one free wedding is between August and December but we’re getting married on April 20th. I think we have a pretty good story and our getaway car for our reception is a Mother’s Cookie truck so I thought I would go ahead and apply for your contest anyway. We both love your photography but there’s no way we can afford to pay you. She’s working part time and using student loans and all my money is invested in a boat that is in the Galapagos. Thanks for taking the time to read this, we hope you’ll consider making an exception.

guest non-book

I thought this was a cute idea. And I happen to have a typewriter, but I don't know how much fiddling we want to do with it. It might cause too many problems. I might decide to just get some really nice sheets of text wove paper and a fountain pen or something else mildly fancy.
I really just don't want a guest book. I know I will be tempted to throw it away 10 years from now and I will feel too guilty to do it. So I would like something less burdensome, like sheets of paper that I can fold and/or tuck into some picture album. Yes.

Flowers

My mom is making my bouquet, with help from one of my aunt Nancy. A little less greenery. Bridesmaids will have hair pieces instead of corsages and the tables will have only a few stems.

Location, location, reception

I went to a reception at this old barn in Mapleton, UT about 2 years ago and it was pretty sweet. It is available on April 20th so looks like the reception is going to be here!. I am pretty excited! What's more is that they are letting us set everything up the day before, I believe around 10am. It's going to be a dream...

What I will look like...

So I really liked my old purple prom dress from high school. This is my friend Rachel in the picture directly above, and her dress is really similar (and beautiful).
One of Debby's friends named Marie is making my dress. She has the fabric and pattern but she has 2 projects that are due April 1st, so it looks like it won't be ready till then. I am not worried, I hear she is a fast worker.
There is going to be some detain across the top of my shoulders, between my neck and the sleeve. It's really hard to describe, but the cummerbund is going to have a similar look, to tie it all together. I am also having only 1 layer on the sleeves. And my dress will be ivory (my skin tone is such that I look deathly in stark white).

The main thing is I am having her make a full-length detachable outer skirt so it can be knee-length. It will detach with the cummerbund. I am going to be getting low on the dance floor during the reception, so the dress needs to allow a decent range of motion. Once Ryan's mom saw me dance, she agreed that it would be for the best.

Ryan and I like mustaches

The first 3 pictures are hairspirations. I am doing fingerwaves with a single flower attached. I don't know how you attach flowers to heads without a bun or something. Maybe we will glue it to my head like they glue little bows to newborns' heads. I don't know...

Well ladiez...

This is a girls only blog (except for Ryan)

So I thought this blog would be a more efficient way of communicating what is going on with wedding plans instead of sending a spider web of information across my entire wedding team address book.

Please send any information to my meliss.swan@gmail.comaccount, as my other one is getting rather clogged.

Here are some pictures of things that I like. Some ideas for decor and outfits, etc. I can't figure out how to make all the pictures not clump together...

Thanks. I love you all!
